Jason & Christine - Waco, TX Jason & Christine - Waco, TX
My personal story of marriage restoration came a year and a half after my wife left. Her leaving was a shock, and I did not see it coming. Yes, we were having some issues and even seeing a marriage counselor, but I had no idea she was that unhappy and ready to leave the marriage. She left without warning on Mother’s Day, took the kids and a cat, and secretly moved into a women’s abuse shelter. Christine believed she was being emotionally abused in our marriage and sought hotlines that justified this. I knew that was not the reality of our marriage, but it was spiritual warfare peeking its ugly head into our family. Unfortunately, it looked like the enemy was going to win.
While Christine sorted things out, I knew I had to learn to allow God to do significant work in me. I had to stop defending myself and ask the Holy Spirit what ways my actions made Christine feel unsafe. One thing was that I had to stop comparing myself to my dad and stop using the excuse that I was not as loud as my dad was in our home and truly accept any hurt and disconnect that Christine was experiencing through my behavior. As I went on this journey, God showed me that bringing Christine back home would be easy, but He was waiting for me to surrender to Him. God refused to let this opportunity go by and not use it for His glory!
Throughout my entire stand, I was confident that God would restore us. I didn’t hear any audible voice from God; I just knew this wasn’t God’s plan for our family. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8), and this was obviously the work of the evil one. So, I partnered with Jesus and His power and stood for restoration. I stood persistent when the divorce papers showed up, when she told me to move on, when she began dating again, and even after the judge granted the divorce.
According to the state of Texas, my marriage was dead, but I know Someone who specializes in raising dead things! So I kept standing, loving, and believing, as Romans 4:18 describes, “hoping against hope,” knowing that God would restore and resurrect my marriage even against all odds! Did it work? Let me tell you, just two months after the divorce was finalized, Christine came back home, and four days later, we got remarried in Las Vegas with her parents as witnesses and her dad officiating the wedding! What once was dead was now restored!
Did Christine ever tell me it was over? Constantly! Did she ever ask me to move on? Often! Did she say I was to blame for her leaving and that it was too late to fix it? Many times! So allow our testimony to encourage you and to remind you to keep your eyes on Jesus and NOT on what your spouse is doing or even tells you. Never forget this simple truth: Nothing is impossible with God.
